Nikkei Asian Review
Why is Asia, home to over half the world's population and a third of its GDP, often absent from global media coverage? ――We started asking ourselves this simple question in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan on March 11, 2011. A sudden burst of Japan-related coverage appeared in international outlets, then things started to go quiet. Correspondents from abroad went home, leaving sensational headlines and Fukushima fears in their wake.
We reached the conclusion that Asia, as a whole, is underrepresented in media because the region lacks a home-grown service with global reach. No news outlets concentrate primarily on covering issues and events across Asia. Being the only Asia-based business news organization with bureaus and correspondents in every major city, we at the Nikkei group decided to rise to the challenge ourselves.
Asia is a vast and complex region of many countries. It is a current driver of global economic growth. It is the future. Nikkei Asian Review has thus been created to change the way Asia is reported on internationally. The time has come for an Asian media outlet to give a voice to the region. Nikkei Asian Review's goal is to boost understanding of the region and dismantle stereotypes about its people, businesses and nations. Our aim is to foster an Asia with deeper connections regionally and with the world.
