2021.03.17 Unauthorized access to email account of Nikkei China (Hong Kong) Ltd.

March17, 2021 - Nikkei China (Hong Kong) Ltd., an overseas subsidiary of Nikkei Inc., and the Nikkei Hong Kong Bureau have recently confirmed that there was unauthorized access to their corporate email account. It is suspected that personal information, including the names of overseas customers, was leaked.

According to our internal investigation, the unauthorized access is believed to have started in October 2020. The information that may have leaked includes personal information of 1,644 overseas customers who have contracts with Nikkei China (Hong Kong) Ltd. for the international edition and online edition of the Nikkei and Nikkei Asia. Such information includes names, email addresses, company names, addresses and telephone numbers. It also includes credit card information of 24 corporate customers.

It is suspected that information on the source of news releases and other emails sent to Nikkei Hong Kong Bureau was also leaked. No customer information in Japan has been leaked.

We apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to many of our stakeholders. We will work to prevent any recurrence by thoroughly managing personal information.
