Nikkei's CSR

As a responsible corporate citizen, Nikkei strives to contribute to sustainable development while responding to public expectations for the prompt dissemination of accurate information through its media business centered on newspapers. Nikkei's efforts include the granting of awards to recognize those who have contributed to a free and sound economy, as well as to advancing the stability and development of Asia. We also support the advancement of print culture as well as actions to protect the environment.

Social Contributions

Contributing to Economic Development

Nikkei Child-Raising Support Award
Nikkei presents this in recognition of outstanding projects for halting the declining birthrate and nurturing future generations. Nominations are solicited from companies, local governments, private organizations and civic groups. The award is presented to companies in which women are able to balance their careers and child-raising and to local governments and citizen groups that support child-rearing across their communities.
Nikkei Regional IT Awards
These awards are presented to recognize projects that demonstrate outstanding achievement in innovative IT applications and promote regional economies and industries or enhance the quality of life and culture based on regional creative ingenuity.
Jiro Enjoji Memorial Prize
This prize recognizes the activities of young, up-and-coming or midlevel economists. The prize was established in 2006 as a part of the activities organized in order to commemorate Nikkei's 130th anniversary and was named after Jiro Enjoji, former president of Nikkei, who also served as the first president of the Japan Center for Economic Research.
Nikkei Prize for Economics Books
Established in 1958 to contribute to the enhancement, dissemination and broadened application of studies and knowledge in economics, management and accounting, the awards are given to about five authors and include a prizes of one million yen and, in the event a particularly noteworthy book has been published, a Special Prize of 1.5 million yen. Publishers of the award-winning books receive a medal.
Special courses
It is our vital role to support the education programs for young generations. Nikkei offers special courses on environment, one issue that is critical to our future, at the Keio University Graduate School of System Design and Management. At the Okuma School of Public Management of Waseda University, we as a "Mecenat Support Member" contribute to scholarship funds, offer internships and make our editorial writers available as visiting lecturers.

Promoting Print Culture

Nikkei Novel Award
A 10 million-yen prize presented to writers of outstanding novels that feature both rich narrative reflecting the times and society as well as offering outstanding entertainment value. Nikkei Medium-Length Novel Award was also established with a one million-yen prize to recognize excellent medium-length novels that offer fresh points of view. This award is co-sponsored by Nikkei and Nikkei Publishing, Inc.

Promoting Communications in Asia

Nikkei Asia Prizes
The Nikkei Asia Prizes were established in 1996 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of The Nikkei, and annually presented to individuals or groups that have contributed to the stability and development of Asia in three fields-regional growth, technological innovation and culture.
Nikkei Asia Scholarship
Through this scholarship, Nikkei invites masters and doctoral candidates from Asian countries and regions including China, India, Korea and other ASEAN countries to serve as senior researchers. The goal is to promote research activities in the region by enhancing communications between universities and research institutes. The maximum term is one year. Scholarship awardees will work under the guidance of the Japan Center for Economic Research.
Tsinghua-Nikkei Institute of Media Studies
Nikkei jointly founded this academic institute on the campus of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, with Nikkei Business Publishing, Inc., along with the Communication School of Tsinghua University in March 2006. Staffed with full-time personnel, the Institute plans to conduct research over the next five years into the digitalization of publications and newspapers and the transformation of the mass media. Nikkei assigns one of its own research staff to the Institute.

Environmental measures

Nikkei Global Environmental Technology Awards
Established in 1991, this award is given to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to environmental preservation through researching actual environmental conditions, conducting environmental assessments, and developing technology to balance the environment and the economy. Work conducted includes observations on the ozone layer, restoration of ecosystems in forests, and recycling technology.
Newspaper production
We actively promote environmentally responsible newspaper production. Our efforts include adopting the world's lightestweight newsprint, using an exceptionally high ratio of recycled materials, switching to ecologically sound printing inks and introducing computer-toplate (CTP) machines that directly print page layouts to printing plates as an effective means for conserving resources. In addition, we are acquiring ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management, at our printing plants.

Governance

Management Advisory Committee
Consisting of the President, external business managers, academic experts, and legal professionals, this committee advises the Board of Directors on management issues and corporate governance to ensure Nikkei continues to serve and improves as a trusted mass media enterprise.
Risk Management and Compliance Committee
Chaired by a director who has ultimate responsibility for risk management and compliance, the committee reviews the management of risks that may affect the company's business continuity, such as system failure, large-scale disasters, and compliance-related issues. It is also responsible for immediately implementing appropriate countermeasures as required.
