2017.10.02 Nikkei, Columbia Journalism School announce Asia scholarship

Nikkei Inc. and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism agreed Monday to jointly establish a scholarship for Asian journalists and students.Columbia Journalism School is known for its advanced education using digital technology. It also administers the Pulitzer Prize, which, for the past century, has been awarded for excellence in reporting.Nikkei and Columbia Journalism School hope to support the development of journalism in Asia through the scholarship program.

The $100,000 scholarship, tentatively called the Columbia-Nikkei Scholarship, will be awarded to one aspiring journalist each year from among candidates across Asia. The recipient will take classes in data and business journalism at the graduate school.After completing a master's degree, the recipient will return to his or her home to play a leading role in helping journalism grounded in freedom of speech to take root.

Nikkei and Columbia Journalism School will hold the first symposium at the University of Tokyo's Yasuda Auditorium on Jan. 29, 2018. The gathering will be co-hosted by the University of Tokyo's Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies; Keio University's Institute for Journalism, Media & Communication Studies; Sophia University's Institute of Media, Culture and Journalism; and Waseda University's Journalism School. The universities will take turns hosting the symposium each year.
