The temples in Kyoto and Nara are a must-see from many tourists who come to Japan. In recent years, a growing number of visitors arrive seeking a more immersive experience. One place that travellers have flocked to is Mount Koya, where the Buddhist monk, Kukai, underwent ascetic training in the 9th century and which was designated a World Heritage Site in 2004. Numerous temples can be found across the mountain, some of which provide visitors with lodging and the chance to experience the life of a Buddhist monk. We follow a tourist who spends the night at one such temple in search of rest and respite.
