Mr. Hideki Kanda was born in 1953 and received
an LL.B. from the University of Tokyo in 1977. His main areas
of specialization include commercial law, corporate law, banking
regulation and securities regulation. Mr. Kanda served as Visiting
Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School in 1989,
1991 and 1993, and Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School in
1996.

Involved in Debate on Corporate Law Reform
Having served as a member of several advisory panels
at the government, Hideki Kanda has been involved in debates on
many corporate law revisions, including the establishment of a
system of "share exchange," which was approved at the Diet last
August, and the new legislation on corporate divisions. His research
interest covers corporate law in general, including corporate
governance. Mr. Kanda has both Japanese and English publications
in major legal journals on various aspects of corporate law and
related matters. Mr. Kanda's research focus also extends to tax
and economics. He emphasizes on the importance of transparency
of the Japanese system and the need of increased accountability
toward shareholders.
His experience includes serving as Visiting Professor of Law at
the University of Chicago Law School and Visiting Professor at
Harvard Law School. Recent publications include Comparative Corporate
Governance (Oxford University Press, 1998, in English, co-editor),
Economics of Corporate Law (University of Tokyo Press, 1998, co-editor),
and Commercial Law II: Corporations (3rd ed.) (Yuhikaku, 1999,
co-editor).
