Bradley Bartz
President, ABC Solar Incorporated
Bradley Bartz was one of the first dozen internet entrepreneurs in Japan. Beginning in 1992 with ad supported online systems, leading into full ISP with NTT-PC, webdesign for Budweiser and other large multinationals in the Japanese market. In 1998 Bartz launched JMAIL.CO.JP and has grown it to a 520,000 + registered Japanese userbase.

Mr. Bartz is infamous in Japan for "breaking the Japanese Internet". In 1996 Bartz successfully registered over 100 Japanese .co.jp domain names only to incur the wrath of JPNIC. With the new JPNIC rules coming this year Bartz stands with pride that the bastards are finally opening up the market. But, problems exist with JPNIC and Bartz again. Seems that JPNIC is denying our rights to be first in line for our .jp domain collection. We own hoken.co.jp but we can not register hoken.jp because we are American. No fury like a Bartz scorned. Watch out JPNIC.

Elliot Maxwell
Senior Fellow for the Digital Economy, Communications and Society Program, Aspen Institute
I have been involved with the Internet since 1979 when my then boss, Steve Lukasik, former head of DARPA and then Chief Technologist for the FCC, arranged for ARPANET mailboxes for his deputies in the FCC's Office of Science and Technology. The potential for worldwide collaboration inherent in the medium was evident even then, and we used the ARPANET to prepare a blueprint for data processing at the FCC. Since then I have become more and more impressed with the capabilities that the Internet can provide as well as the difficult issues that it presents.

After leaving the FCC I served as a consultant in Japan, spent 10 years in the Chairman's Office of Pacific Telesis doing corporate strategy, and served in the U.S. government as Deputy Chief of the FCC's Office of Plans and Policy during the implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and as Special Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce where I coordinated the Internet and e-commerce activities of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Most recently I have been the Senior Fellow for the Digital Economy at the Aspen Institute, heading the Institute's Internet Policy Project. Our first report, which addresses many of the issues involved in drawing new "borders" on the "borderless" Internet should be available in February, 2002.
